In recent years, the demand for non-target analysis has been increasing in many fields, such as odor analysis and impurity analysis, using GC-MS. This involves conducting comprehensive measurements without specifying the measurement targets through full scan MS and extracting valuable information from the vast spectral data obtained. Since the full scan MS data obtained from GC-MS can contain information on hundreds to thousands of compounds, efficiently identifying valuable information from this data is a very important challenge. Additionally, it is crucial to select the optimal pretreatment device considering high extraction capability, broad coverage, and the form and properties of the sample, in order to comprehensively extract samples without loss and introduce them into GC-MS. This application note presents a case study of non-target analysis that combines a system connecting a pretreatment device to a Thermo Scientific GC-MS instrument with AnalyzerPro, a deconvolution software from SpectralWorks.

The processed foods we consume develop unique flavors and aromas due to various differences in the quantities and origins of the ingredients used, as well as cooking times, even if they share the same name. Understanding these differences at the component level is crucial in food research, and the use of GC/MS methods is expected to shed light on volatile components, which are believed to be factors influencing aroma. Non-target analysis that encompasses all contained components has been considered challenging due to the vast amount of information and the complexity of analytical operations. To obtain reliable results, efficient sampling methods, chromatographic separation, advanced mass separation, and software for smooth statistical analysis of the data are required. In this technical document, we present a workflow using high-resolution GC-MS (Orbitrap GC-MS) and Compound Discoverer software for low molecular analysis, as a solution to smoothly and accurately address this complex food comparison, exemplified by the inter-sample comparison of commercially available meat sauces from three food manufacturers.

There are various methods for sugar analysis using HPLC, but traditional differential refractive index detectors have challenges such as sensitivity issues and the inability to perform gradient analysis. Additionally, while fluorescence detectors can detect low concentrations, they require derivatization, making the sample preparation complicated. Management of gloss agents and decomposition products using a single quadrupole mass spectrometer LC-MS enables stable quality assessment of plating solutions!

Quantitative analysis of gloss agents (saccharin and 2-butin-1,4-diol) in electroplating nickel plating solution using LC-MS helps maintain a consistent composition of the plating solution and greatly aids in the quality control of gloss agents. This method analyzes the components contained in the gloss agents under two different conditions based on their chemical composition. Additionally, samples can be easily measured by simply diluting them with water, and good results ranging from 92% to 108% have been obtained in addition-recovery tests. Furthermore, analytical conditions have been devised to achieve stable measurements over a long period. By using MS, detection is possible even at low concentrations in samples containing high concentrations of impurities, such as plating solutions, and detection is possible with both UV and MS. Measurement of not only gloss agents but also decomposition and by-products is possible, leading to further evaluation of the plating solution. By combining the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Exploris GC high-resolution accurate mass spectrometer with Thermo Scientific SPME Arrow fibers, PFAS in complex environmental samples can be efficiently analyzed. This method allows for the detection of low concentrations of PFAS compounds with high sensitivity while minimizing sample pretreatment. Furthermore, by utilizing HRAM full scan data, both targeted compound quantification and non-target analysis can be achieved, rapidly expanding the analytical scope.
